The Basics of Acupuncture: How It Can Help You

By Nachelle, Lic. Ac., MAOM, Dipl. OM of Inner Rivers Family Acupuncture, LLC

The Common Question(s)
Every day, several people ask me the same curious question: “Does acupuncture treat that? How about this? And what about that?” 99% of the time, the answer is a resounding yes! Whether it is back pain, allergies, migraines, fatigue, or anxiety, for example, acupuncture effectively addresses all of these conditions. Even more impressive is acupuncture’s ability to stave off illness, disease, and a wide range of maladies through its focus on preventative care.

On Becoming an Acupuncturist… (the Abridged Version)
I am deeply passionate about educating and sharing the multi-faceted benefits of acupuncture with our community. Not only do I bear witness to its profound results on a daily basis in clinic, but I have personally overcome health concerns through regular acupuncture treatments and herbal medicine. In fact, my own experience was so transformative that I became inspired to attain my Master’s of Science degree in Oriental Medicine. After more than four years of intensive, full-time medical training and clinical rotations, I became a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist so I can help others (just like you). My goal is to empower, educate, and partner with patients toward transcending their own health imbalances and preventing illnesses before they manifest so everyone can enjoy a more fulfilling life!

So, What Does Acupuncture Do?
The simple answer: Acupuncture facilitates your body’s amazing ability to heal itself. Studies have shown acupuncture can positively influence biochemical changes in the mind and body (such as the production of feel-good endorphins, the generation of pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory chemicals, and the restoration of hormonal balance), to name a few. It also strengthens the immune system and stimulates the brain’s limbic system (which coordinates many processes in our body). Yet, its true power lies in its remarkable ability to catalyze our own healing potential.

There are times when our minds and bodies have accumulated too many stressors that our innate ability to heal ourselves is not functioning at optimal capacity. This is the pivotal moment when acupuncture can transform your experience with pain, trauma, discomfort, hopelessness, and suffering. Acupuncture assists by gradually nudging us closer and closer to the threshold required to jumpstart the self-healing process. When our “reserves” are empty and our wheels are spinning, we need a series of extra pushes to reach “baseline” – the point at which our body is strong enough to advance wellness instead of sink deeper into poor health. Making us stronger and more resilient enables us to defend against harmful stressors and unleash our body’s complex wisdom to generate a healthier internal environment that functions at 100%.

Although patients frequently report that acupuncture can cause some surprising side effects (such as better sleep, more energy, less common colds, and regulated menstrual cycles), acupuncture treatments are safe and typically have no negative side effects.
